An immensely entertaining and often comical walk-through of a cricket umpire's season. From the tough, no nonsense Yorkshire leagues to the tranquil backwaters of Lincolnshire village cricket. From fire stopped play to arguably the biggest league game seen for years. It's all here as seen from the man in the middle - does he always get it right?
An Umpire Lot eBook Charles Manby
Charles Manby has been playing or umpiring senior league cricket in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for more than 40 years. His book covers a cricket season from an umpire's perspective. Often light-hearted - with anecdotes such as the day fire stopped play and the occasion when a fielder deliberately kicked the ball over the boundary - it also also underlines the trials and tribulations endured by umpires.
Said Charles: "I took notes on a season's umpiring in the Central Yorkshire Cricket League and worked them into the book. I have been careful not to name specific players, officials or teams; however, all CYCL supporters will think they recognise some of the characters mentioned."
Charles has also been heavily involved in organising junior cricket in Lincolnshire and is still umpiring in that county as well as advising on and judging umpire competence as County Performance Officer.
